VIEW series – Week 1: Varicose Veins — A Walk-In Fix for a Longstanding Problem

About the VIEW Series :
Vascular Interventions. Every Week.
This series brings you real stories and insights into the world of Interventional Radiology—where advanced imaging meets precise, minimally invasive treatment. One condition at a time, one life-changing procedure a week

 Meet Mr. M, 52.

For nearly a decade, Mr. M struggled with leg heaviness, swelling, and bulging veins. After long workdays or extended travel, he often experienced leg cramps.

“I thought it was just age,” he told us. “But then I started noticing skin darkening near my ankle. It gradually worsened.”

Once an active sports enthusiast, Mr. M had slowly given up those activities as the bulging veins became more prominent and symptoms worsened.

When he visited our clinic, we performed a colour Doppler ultrasound of his legs. It revealed significant venous reflux—blood flowing backward—in his great saphenous vein (GSV), the most common culprit in varicose vein cases.

Our Plan: Endovenous Laser Ablation

We scheduled Mr. M for a laser ablation procedure.
Under local anesthesia, a thin catheter was inserted into the GSV under ultrasound guidance. Laser energy was then delivered along the length of the vein, sealing it shut from within.

The entire procedure took less than 45 minutes.

Post-Procedure Course

Mr. M walked out of the center the same day, wearing compression stockings.
He returned to work the next morning and resumed daily walking as advised.

At his 1-week follow-up:

  • The bulging veins had visibly collapsed

  • His legs felt lighter

At 6 weeks:

  • Skin discolouration had started to improve

  • His cramps had completely resolved

  • He was gradually resuming physical activities

“I didn’t know this kind of treatment even existed. No cuts, no hospital stay—just in and out,” he said.

Why Interventional Radiology Works So Well for Varicose Veins

  • Image-guided = precise and targeted

  • Minimally invasive = faster recovery

  • No stitches or scars = better cosmetic results

  • Long-lasting symptom relief

For patients like Mr. M, this isn’t just a cosmetic fix—it’s freedom from pain and a return to mobility.
